Laozi (老子) was a Chinese philosopher of antiquity that authored the Tao Te Ching, and is the originator of a universal system of thought called Taoism.
According to the doctrine of Taoism, everything in existence exhibits a natural state of balance between two opposing forces as represented by the Tao. This idea closely resembles the concept of homeostasis, which is a fundamental principle of modern science.
Restoration of balance between the two forces of yin and yang is one of the central goals of Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Laozi also promoted the doctrine of transmigration of souls (metempsychosis).
Te refers to a doctrine of behavioral protocols that emphasized humility and elegance in simplicity. The three core values of Taoist ethics are compassion, moderation, and humility. Laozi is reported to have practiced asceticism and advocated for a minimalist approach to life known as wu wei.
It is also believed that the Tao Te Ching contains esoteric instructions for special breathing exercises used to promote health and longevity. This practice has come to be known as qigong.
