F.A.Q.

Is Naturopathic Medicine Right For You?

Naturopathy is a distinct philosophy of health that seeks to maximize wellness by assisting the body's innate capacity to recover from illness and injury, and by increasing the function of biochemical processes that are necessary for health. Naturopathy may include any number of healing modalities, including herbal remedies, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, mechanotherapy, counseling, and medical dietetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and minor surgical procedures.

Licensed naturopathic doctors complete a four-year medical program accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a national accrediting body, and pass medical board exams administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners.

The organization representing accredited naturopathic medical programs in the United States and Canada is the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges. Many naturopathic doctors are also members of state naturopathic associations and national naturopathic organizations.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

First Do No Harm
While trained in pharmacy and surgical methods, naturopathic physicians seek to first employ methods which pose the least risk of causing harm to their patients.

Healing Power Of Nature
Naturopathic medicine recognizes a self-healing process of the body that is ordered and intelligent. We do not purport to be the cause of cure, but simply a catalyst to effect that which would occur naturally, given the right conditions and resources.

Identify The Cause
Naturopathic physicians seek to identify the root causes of illness, rather than to merely suppress symptoms, whenever possible.

Acknowledge The Whole Person
Naturopathic physicians believe that a person not simply a bag of chemicals, but a multidimensional being that functions on many interpenetrating levels. For true healing to take place, the physical body must be taken in the context of nonphysical factors which impact its function.

Physician As Teacher
Naturopathic physicians are experts at explaining complex health matters in plain language that you can understand. We will encourage and support you in taking responsibility for their own health, and will trust in your ability to make the best decision for you when faced with difficult health decisions. Rather than to act as a dictator issuing orders, naturopathic physicians seek to form partnerships with their patients that are based on mutual respect and understanding.

Prevention Is The Best Cure
Emphasizing the preservation of health, naturopathic physicians assess a patient's risk factors, heredity, and susceptibility to disease, and make appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to help preserve health and increase wellness.
